The Center for Nonviolent Social Change

Visit early in the week or Sunday morning and visit early in the day to secure your spot. The Martin Luther King Jr. birth home is where Dr. King was born and lived during the first 12 years of his life. Visit historic Fire Station No. 6, one of the South’s first desegregated fire houses, on your way to Dr. King’s birth home. Everything was great our tour guide was so informative. I learned so much it was a very emotional ending. I wish my family could have went with me.

We were dropped off at another restaurant that we visited the previous day on our Southern Food Tour, however we should have gone to Busy Bee's as advertised. We didn't spend any time at the historic black colleges, as we just drove down the street and looked out the van windows. The guide was friendly however that's not enough considering the amount of money that's charged for this tour. This tour company should not be used as we believe Viator could find better for it's travelers.

Arielle loves talking local Atlanta history and meeting guests from all over. We'd love to have you back anytime for one of our Food and History walking tours. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born January 15, 1929, at 501 Auburn Avenue, the home of his maternal grandparents. For the next twelve years, he lived here with his grandparents, parents, siblings, other family members, and borders.

Plan Your Visit

On November 25, 1926 Christine married a minister by the name of Michael Luther King at her father's church. Instead of Christine moving in with her new husband he moved in with her and her parents in the family home. Over time the Kings would have three children born in the home, Willie Christine, Michael Jr. (later known as Martin Luther King, Jr.), and Alfred Daniel.

She was incredibly well prepared, had great knowledge and was very caring. She made sure everyone had a good time and was great at teaching the history. Even though things were shut down because of the covid19 the tour guide did a wonderful job!

She called to make sure we were still going on the tour, she had her facts and information all together. She also had pictures to show because we couldn't go inside. And the best thing about it she took her time and made sure everyone understood and was together.

The birth home is located in the residential section of the Auburn Avenue Historic District. It is a two-story house with a front porch, parlor, study, kitchen, dining room, bedroom and bathroom on the first level. The second floor includes four bedrooms and a bathroom. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta at this home of his maternal grandparents, A.D. And Jennie Williams, on January 15, 1929. When Martin Luther King, Sr. married Alberta Williams, the King family moved into the house on Auburn Avenue where they lived until 1941.

We hope you can visit us here in Atlanta again soon. The tours are filled on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the tour. No advanced registration or phone reservations are accepted. Upon arriving at the park proceed to the information desk located inside of the visitor center to sign up for a tour.

If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund. Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time. This is where Dr. King attended university. We’ll find a local expert to take you on a private tour of 1320 Martin Luther King Jr Dr SW. The birth home of Martin Luther King Jr. is open for ranger-led tours from 10 a.m.
